Professional singing demands a lot of skills and qualifications: Vocal ability in combination with a good singing technique that enables healthy singing throughout a long career, analytical proficieny and acting skills, gift for languages, diligence and discipline … and certainly some musical curiosity.
While at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, I taught fellow (instrumental) students in singing and found it an intriguing experience to not only deal with my own voice but to observe vocal and physical phenomena with others, reflect them and turn the observations into methodical teaching advice.
Later, as a free-lancer, I taught private lessons and worked as a vocal coach for the Limburg Cathedral choir and the nuns at the Benedictine abbey of St. Hildegard in Eibingen.
In 2009 I was appointed professor for baroque singing at the Hochschule für Musik Nuremberg (D) and taught from 2016-17 additionally at the Hochschule für Musik in Weimar (D). In 2018 I was appointed to a professorship at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz where I have since been teaching voice at the Hochschule für Musik and have initiated a number of projects.
One of the big challenges in vocal education is to merge allegedly opposing principles, like feeling body tension without being tensed up, singing relaxedly but not atonic, performing art without being artificial …
I don’t teach according to a special technical method. Each student’s personality and individual vocal disposition require individual attention in order to offer suitable exercises and methods to the singer for practise and self-development.
